• German library

    Leipzig (D)

The 14,000-sq-m library extension includes new periodical areas, reading areas, administrative offices, book restoration facilities and a book and scripture museum. The periodicals towers are being extended south-west, and will be housed in a new, shared building shell. This – like a book cover – is the new cover story of the German National Library in Leipzig.
The glass panes are confident and contemporary – symbolising and defining the location. One old periodicals tower pierces each side of the binding.

  • The shell opens out into the main building. This area adopts the proportions of the surrounding buildings, while the sweeping structure beneath completes the square’s border. The spine of the book sits protectively above the valuable collection.
