• Visitors’ Centre

    Black Forest (D)

The administration and visitors’ centre will be housed in two separate buildings.

A duplicate villa creates one service unit on a shared site.

But the duplicate is homogeneously clad in wood shingles, indicating its link with the visitors’ centre, planned to be built opposite.

The exhibition centre will feature large sloped roofs, drawing on influences from traditional Black Forest architecture, and giving the place a regional but unique feel.

A wooded courtyard forms the green heart of the building – an atrium of trees overlooked by all exhibition rooms.

  • This courtyard allows the tree to be viewed over three levels, from the top to its root.

The outer walls are – as in all exhibition rooms – closed; the courtyard is the only source of muted, non-glaring daylight.

All steps run in a ring around the atrium, including those leading to the basement, the forest floor, which is home to the cinema, events rooms, and the restaurant, whose terrace is located both in the atrium and on the southern side, and is partly covered.

This can mark the end of the circuit, the point where it reaches the forest nature trail via the courtyard.
