• Residential building H6
    Erfurt (D)

The western side of the former barracks was closed off with a series of residential homes. The strict construction plan stipulated free-standing residential homes with 3.5-m (!) wide spaces in between. It was also heavily geared around the historic ideas of the Bauhaus era with white cubes. We chose one of the two permitted white shades for the façade, and accentuated the semi-basement with pale bricks.

  • The basement spaces receive light through a sunken courtyard with outside staircase. This enabled the compact two-level structure to provide 250 sq m of living space for the family of 6. The large rooftop terrace boasts a coveted view of the cathedral.
The house features a solar-heating and photovoltaic system, ice storage heating and a rainwater reservoir, and meets the energy standards of a “Plus-Energiehaus”.
